CCE - Slash Walls, Beech Control and Silvicultural Strategies for Hardwood Regeneration

Slash Walls, Beech Control and Silvicultural Strategies for Hardwood Regeneration

Friday September 22, 2017 • 9AM – 4:30PM
Arnot Teaching and Research Forest, Van Etten, NY
Morning snacks provided, BYO lunch, Dress for the Weather, Hardhat Required

Learning objectives…as a result of this workshop participants will:

1. Understand the result of insufficient strategies for controlling regeneration barriers.
2. Be able to describe the effectiveness of and appropriate application of chemical vs. mechanical
beech control methods.
3. Know the differences among herbicide labels for differences in treatment methods (e.g., injection,
hack-n-squirt, basal bark)
4. Understand the assumptions for intensive even-aged reproduction systems
5. Inspect and analyze two+ slash walls used to exclude deer. Be able to compare the costs of
construction and maintenance for slash walls versus
conventional fences. Understand how a deer interacts
with various fence designs, and effective fence design
features.
6. Interact with one or more loggers who have built slash
walls to gain insights on methods, barriers, strategies
and costs

Presentations to include topics such as:

  • Forest regeneration struggles at the Arnot Forest
  • Deer-forest interactions and the role of fences
  • Monitoring vegetation impacts with AVID
  • Becoming certified for pesticide applications
  • Ground based & excavator slash wall
